French force assembly against abhorrent insect invasion
France is taking up the fight against the bed bug epidemic that is raging in the country's capital and which only seems to be increasing, writes the French news agency AFP.
The blood-sucking insects have recently been found in a wide range of locations in the Paris area, including metro trains, Charles de Gaulle airport, hospitals and cinemas.
According to local authorities, it is estimated that more than one in ten French households have had a problem with bedbugs in recent years. The problems are possibly exacerbated even more by the fact that next year Paris will host the Summer Olympics.
On Thursday, the government formed a special task force, hoping to remedy the problem. But how to practically deal with the plague, no one seems to really know.
In a first step, however, recommendations go out to the public: Check the beds if you stay in a hotel and be careful if you buy furniture on the second-hand market.

As recently as February, she announced that this term would be her last, after increasing calls for her resignation were heard due to her apparently faltering health, writes NBC News.

British tree marauder outrages: "Like stealing happiness"
A 16-year-old tree marauder in England has made headlines all over the world after felling an iconic tree, which was included in an adventure film about Robin Hood, international media write.
The boy felled the 300-year-old tree in Northumberland - apparently with a chainsaw - in what the authorities are labeling as vandalism, but which the public seems to see as a breach of world order.
The tree became famous when it featured in the 1991 Hollywood film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, but for people living in the area it has been a destination for generations, a place where people went to get married or have a picnic.
The question everyone now wants an answer to is obvious: Why?
The police have not yet received an answer to it. And the question is whether there is any answer that can calm the mood.
- How can someone do this? It's like stealing happiness, says police officer Kimberly McGuinness
