Nigeria's president is being grilled over proposals for expensive purchases
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has found himself in the hot air since proposals for extravagant purchases were presented in the House of Commons, writes the BBC.
According to the proposals, the state will spend the equivalent of just over SEK 233 million to buy an airplane and a yacht for the president. At the same time, the cost of living in the country is soaring and around 137 million Nigerians are estimated to live in extreme poverty.
- The poor can fight on in a canoe while the president wants to go around in a yacht, says opposition politician Shehu Sani to the channel.
The proposal for the yacht was voted down and the issue of the aircraft has not yet reached the House of Commons. Tinubu's staff claims that it is not the president himself who requested the purchases.

Nigerian presidential yacht denied by House of Commons
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's dream of taxpayers paying for a yacht has been crushed by the House of Commons, the BBC reports.
According to the proposal, the state would pay the equivalent of SEK 66.6 million for a presidential yacht, but the proposal was voted down and the money will instead be spent on reducing student debt.
Tinubu went to the polls as recently as last spring to end the state's waste of money. A spokesperson in his staff says it was the Navy that requested the ship, and not Tinubu himself.
