Geert Wilders dumped opposition to Korans - rushes in public opinion
Opinion figures for Geert Wilders have surged in the last 24 hours ahead of the Dutch election today and in a late poll his PVV is the largest party. This is reported by Politico.
The right-wing populist politician partially changed his strategy in the last days of the debate, according to the Times.
Geert Wilders has campaigned hard on his opposition to immigration and what he called the "Islamization" of the Netherlands. But in a party leadership debate on Tuesday, he instead promised to be a prime minister "for everyone - regardless of religion, background or origin". Wilders also distanced himself from previous promises to ban the Koran and mosques.
The outcome comes after an election campaign that was largely characterized by a debate about immigration and integration, according to The Times.
However, Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius, leader of the right-liberal VVD and one of Wilder's challengers for the post of prime minister, dismissed the move and said that Wilders is unlikely to make such drastic changes to his policies as he claimed.
- I don't think there is anyone who actually believes that, she says.

The former refugee wants to tighten migration
Right-liberal VVD party leader Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius could become the Netherlands' first female prime minister after the country goes to the polls today.
She is a former refugee from Turkey who came to the Netherlands after her father sought asylum in the country. Now she uses her story to explain why the Netherlands should tighten migration policy, according to AP.
According to the party programme, an excessively large reception of refugees means that one cannot afford to give everyone the chance to become "an engineer, a nurse, a police officer, a minister or a party leader for the VVD".
In polls before the election, the VVD is equal in size with the social democratic Workers' Party and the right-wing populist Freedom Party.
