Turkey wants to organize COP31 - Erdogan counts on support
Turkey has applied to host the COP31 climate summit in 2026, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirms during an appearance at COP28 in Dubai.
Erdogan seems confident of Turkey's chances, even though Australia has also said it wants to host the event.
- I am sure that you, dear friends, will provide the necessary support in this regard, Erdogan said according to AFP.
In the past, Turkey has not directly taken the lead in the climate issue. The country only ratified the Paris Agreement from 2015 at the end of 2021 – and thus became the last G20 country to commit to the climate agreement.

King Charles: "Our economy and survival at stake"
Britain's King Charles III is very worried about the consequences of the climate crisis. He said that in his speech at COP28 in Dubai on Friday morning.
If the world does not quickly take the measures that nature requires, "our economy and survival are at stake", stated Charles in the speech.
- The world does not belong to us, we belong to the world.
The British monarch has long been committed to environmental issues and spoke at COP26 in Scotland in 2021. However, he did not attend the most recent conference in Egypt, reportedly because then British Prime Minister Liz Truss objected.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also spoken at COP28 today.
- The 1.5 degree target can only be reached if we put an end to all fossil fuels, said the UN chief.

Bill Gates invests billions in green fuel in Örnsköldsvik
Microsoft founder Bill Gates is investing billions in a large e-methanol project being built in Örnsköldsvik, reports SVT Västernorrland. Danish Ørsted writes in a press release that the Gates-founded Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, the European Commission and the European Investment Bank are entering into the Flagship One project.
- Bill Gates is investing 204 million euros in a couple of projects and one of them is Flagship One, says Sebastian Hald Buhl, Sweden manager at Ørsted, to the channel.
The plant is expected to produce up to 55,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year and could thus become Europe's largest green fuel plant when it is completed in 2025.
