Analysis: "The US's position as a global leader is at stake"
Almost seven weeks have passed since President Joe Biden asked the United States Congress for $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, but nothing has happened. It is not only the survival of Ukraine that is at stake - so is the position of the United States as a global leader, writes Stephen Collinson in an analysis in CNN.
If the US "abandons" Ukraine, it sends a signal to Russia and China that the country's security guarantees mean nothing, he writes.
"The idea that Washington would abandon a democratic, independent nation fighting an invasion by the Kremlin would once have been unthinkable."
Rising doubts about US commitment coincide with a chilly winter that has already slowed both sides in the war, writes defense analyst Michael Clarke in Sky News. According to him, Ukraine's main priority in the coming months is not to lose the battle for Avdijivka.
"That would open the way for Russia to make more progress to take Kramatorsk and Slavyansk in the spring, effectively giving them all of Donbas," Clarke writes.

Ukraine appeals to the US: Big risk of losing without support
There is "a big risk" that Ukraine will lose the war against Russia if military support from the United States is not forthcoming, warns President Zelenskyi's chief of staff Andriy Yermak.
- It will be difficult to hold the positions and for the people to survive, says Jermak during a speech at the US Institute of Peace in Washington DC according to the BBC.
The statement comes after a period of conflict in the US Congress regarding the extent of aid to Ukraine.
- We are out of money and almost out of time, says White House budget director Shalanda Young, and warned that there is no "magic pot of funding" left.
