The Russian invasion The outside world's response

Sources: France considering troops for Ukraine

Several European countries have resumed talks about sending state troops or mercenaries to Ukraine, sources told Le Monde.

The talks are said to have started on the initiative of France early this year, but were paused after harsh criticism from, among others, Germany. According to Le Monde's sources, the discussions are now being held again between France, Great Britain and several other unnamed countries. They are said to have been given new life after the announcement that Donald Trump will take over power in the United States.

France has previously on several occasions raised the issue of sending troops from other European countries to Ukraine.

- We call on all allies in the West not to set any red lines. We are not ruling out any possible options, said the country's foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot during a visit to the UK earlier in November.

Angela Merkel: The war could have already broken out in 2008

The Russian invasion of Ukraine could have happened much earlier, says Germany's former Chancellor Angela Merkel in an interview with the BBC. According to Merkel, it could have started in 2008 when NATO considered inviting Ukraine to join the alliance. But Germany wanted otherwise.

Vladimir Putin had not just stood by and watched, says Merkel, whose memoirs will be released at the end of the month.

- And at that time, Ukraine as a country would definitely not have been as prepared as in February 2022.

Merkel also says the gas deals struck with Russia served two purposes: it helped German companies and maintained peace with Moscow.
