The US-China relationship
Xi promises to cooperate with Trump in meeting with Biden
Chinese President Xi Jinping vows to work with President-elect Donald Trump. That was his message when he met his American counterpart Joe Biden at a meeting in Peru, writes Reuters.
The parties met for about two hours and talked about everything from cybercrime to trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea and Russia.
"China's goal of a stable, good and sustainable China-US relationship remains unchanged" after Trump was installed, Xi said. But he also admitted that there have been "ups and downs" in the countries' relationship.
- China is ready to cooperate with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences.
Biden agreed that the two leaders did not always agree, but said they had "direct" and "open" discussions.

The Iran-US relationship
Trump's plan: Go hard on Iran on day one
Donald Trump plans to launch a strategy to put "maximum pressure" on Iran by escalating sanctions, sources in the president-elect's transition team told the Financial Times.
These are new sanctions aimed at Iran's important oil exports, and measures are expected as soon as Trump takes his seat in the White House.
With the strategy, they hope to be able to cut off support for proxy groups and force Iran into talks with the United States about a new nuclear agreement and, in the long run, a more stable relationship. When Trump adopted a similar approach during his last term, it ended with Iran ramping up uranium enrichment.
Now the situation is different, says Bob McNally who was an adviser to George W Bush.
- Oil is their main source of income and their economy is much weaker now than it was then.

The government crisis in Germany
German left-wing populist gains ground: "Perceived as honest"
Radical leftist Sahra Wagenknecht is a central figure in Germany's elections on February 23 with her newly launched populist party Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). That's what Dagens Nyheter writes in a portrait where they have talked to a neighbor from her childhood and a political scientist.
According to neighbor Jürgen Gröbner, there is a lot of negative writing about Sahra Wagenknecht and he believes that it is not true that she is close to the AFD and is pro-Putin, but rather "just a realist".
According to Sarah Wagner, a doctor of political science at Queen's University in Belfast and an expert on radical left movements, the success depends on Wagenknecht being perceived as honest, straightforward and consistent.
- For the voters, it looks like she does not belong to any party [...] she says what the others "don't dare" to say, says Wagner to DN.
The North Korea crisis
North Korea sound bombs with ghost and wolf howls
Relations between North and South Korea have greatly deteriorated and the New York Times writes about a new form of psychological warfare: new type of sound bombing.
Since July, North Korea has used loudspeakers to broadcast sounds such as wolf howls, metal scraping, ghostly screams and artillery fire, according to residents of the South Korean village of Dangsan. It can last up to 24 hours a day.
- It drives us crazy. We can't sleep at night [...] The worst thing is that we don't know when it will end, says An Mi-hee to the New York Times.
