The world's response
Macron called Trump just before the crisis meeting in Paris

French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken to his American counterpart Donald Trump about the prospects for peace in Ukraine. According to the French Le Figaro, the conversation was held close to the meeting in Paris to which Macron has invited European leaders.

It is not clear what the conversation was about.

At 5 p.m., Italy's Giorgia Meloni, Germany's Olaf Scholz and Denmark's Mette Frederiksen arrived at the presidential palace in Paris. The meeting has been described as a crisis move by Macron, in the wake of Europe having no place at the negotiating table when delegations from the United States and Russia meet in Saudi Arabia this week.

NATO chief Mark Rutte has met Donald Trump's Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg in Brussels, Rutte writes in a post on X.

In a meeting that was also attended by the ambassadors of NATO countries, Rutte stressed the importance of a fair and lasting solution for Ukraine, according to a statement on NATO's website.

"We have a lot to do and will work closely to reach an end to the war and lasting security for all of us."

Trump's envoy is later to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President António Costa, writes TT.

Questioned Europe meets in Paris on Ukraine and the US

Today, European leaders are gathering for an emergency meeting in Paris to regain their footing in global politics, writes TT. The lightning-quick meeting comes after the US announced last week that Europe has no place at the negotiating table on the war in Ukraine – and that the continent must be ready to arm itself properly.

The meeting in Paris will be attended by leaders from Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, as well as the EU and NATO.

On Tuesday, the US and Russian delegations are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia. Many are wondering whether what is on their negotiating table is a real peace, or just a compromise-filled ceasefire.

– But Trump will win in any case, because he can say that he has tried, Finnish-Russian political scientist Arkady Moshes told TT last week.

Ukraine: Knew nothing about the US-Russia meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is traveling from Abu Dhabi to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, but the trip has nothing to do with the peace talks between the United States and Russia. Zelenskyj says this according to The Guardian.

He reiterates that Ukraine will not accept an agreement concluded without Ukrainian involvement, and confirms that Kyiv is not a party to the talks.

– We knew nothing about it.
