Chile declares state of emergency after heavy rain
The Chilean government has declared a state of emergency after heavy rains in recent days.
At least ten people have died and more than 1,100 homes have been destroyed in the normally dry regions of Coquimbo and Atacama in northern Chile.
“In one hour, as much rain fell as it normally does in a month,” said Deputy Interior Minister Máximo Pavez.
President José Antonio Kast declared the state of emergency on Monday to allow the military to help with rescue efforts. Several communities have been isolated after roads were washed away and blocked by the floodwaters.
