US warns Americans abroad

The US Department of State has issued a warning urging American travelers to exercise caution. The warning applies globally but primarily in the Middle East.

According to a post on X, the State Department believes that the situation in the Middle East, where the US is at war with Iran, makes the security situation for Americans abroad complex.

“Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and increased vigilance and be prepared for possible flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions,” the department writes.

According to the statement, it cannot be ruled out that Iran could attack US targets and citizens elsewhere in the world.

Finnish Prime Minister accused of corruption

A controversial arena construction project has led the opposition in Finland to accuse the country’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of corruption, Finnish media reports.

It all concerns the Garden Helsinki construction project, which has been granted state support equivalent to just over 385 million kronor. Unclear decision-making processes and the fact that the project company’s chairman is a former party colleague of Orpo in the Coalition Party have led the opposition to demand his resignation.

On Tuesday, a vote of confidence in Orpo will be held in the Riksdag.

The prime minister himself has denied the corruption allegations. Several analysts also agree that it is unlikely that he will be convicted, writes TT.

Trump introduces 50 percent tariffs on Canada

Donald Trump is introducing new 50 percent tariffs on most goods from Canada, US media reports. He accuses the country of "discriminating" against the US car, alcohol and dairy industries.

The tariffs will take effect in 30 days, according to the White House. Exceptions are made for certain products, including energy products, minerals and fish.

The announcement comes after Trump threatened Canada with measures because the smoke from their forest fires has drifted over the US and "poisoned our air", as the president puts it.

After watching the World Cup final alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday, Trump said their relationship was good, but added:

- We have to stop the fires up there. If we can help them, we will. But maybe they should give us some compensation or something, or we'll impose some tariffs. 

State of disaster in Chile - a month's worth of rain fell in one day

Extreme rainstorms have led to ten deaths and destroyed over a thousand homes in Chile since last week. Now the government is declaring a state of disaster in parts of the north, where it is usually dry. A state of emergency has also been declared, El País reports.

The rainfall has been "abnormal and extreme," the country's deputy interior minister Maximo Pavez told AFP.

- A month's worth of rain fell in one hour, he said.

The rain looks set to continue until Friday. The weekend is expected to be drier and milder.
