Zambia halts vote counting – citing violence

Zambia has halted vote counting after Thursday's election, AFP reports. The electoral authority states that election workers were attacked and ballot papers were stolen.

The incumbent president Hakainde Hichilema has previously described the election as peaceful, something he said was due to his reforms as president.

The vote counting will be paused for 24 hours and the electoral authority will then assess the situation. A final election result was initially expected on Monday.

The vote counting is still underway after Wednesday's presidential election in Zambia, Channel Africa reports. A final election result is not expected until Monday.

According to the incumbent president Hakainde Hichilema, who is seeking a new mandate, everything has gone smoothly thanks to his reforms.

– The last election, in 2021, was chaotic. It was loud, it was bloody, it was really scary, but we created peace in the country, he says.
