US sends new aircraft carrier to Middle East
The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for over eight months and participated in the Iran war, will be replaced by the USS George Washington, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The USS Abraham Lincoln was ordered out in November but was redirected to the Middle East in January where it has participated in the Iran war and participated in the US blockade of Iranian ports.
The demanding military operations and the extended deployment have been stressful for the crew, according to members of Congress.
The ship has been deployed for 250 days and has not docked at any port in over six months, which is a record according to Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal.
In a letter to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, he addresses widely reported deficiencies on board, such as the lack of supplies, water contamination, safety deficiencies on deck, and deteriorating mental well-being of the crew.
But according to military officials, the upcoming rotation of the aircraft carriers was planned before the reports of living conditions on board.
