France's social media ban halted
A French law banning social media for children under 15 has been rejected by the country's constitutional council. This is because it constitutes a disproportionate restriction on children's freedom of expression, the council argues.
According to the law, platforms such as Tiktok, Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook must verify the age of users and stop young people under 15 from using their services.
The law, which also entails a mobile phone ban in French high schools, was voted through by parliament in July by a wide margin. It was supposed to come into force in September.
President Emmanuel Macron has tasked Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu with drafting a new bill that takes into account both the Constitutional Council's decision and European law, the Élysée Palace announced. This will be done "as soon as possible."
