A sleeping polar bear in Svalbard was woken up with a loud horn. The move now costs 50,000 Norwegian kroner in fines.

The hissing bear was spotted the other day from a ship in Lomfjorden on the archipelago.

“A person on board used the ship’s horn to wake the bear,” explains the Governor, the highest representative of the Norwegian state on the islands.

But polar bears are strictly protected and must not be disturbed unnecessarily. The person was reported by others on the ship, and has now agreed to pay a fine of 50,000 kroner, writes the Governor.
