EU military support for Ukraine increases sharply

European countries gave Ukraine 7.2 billion euros in military aid in June – the highest amount in over two years, reports TT. The increase is mainly explained by the EU's new support loan of 90 billion euros for 2026 and 2027.

Before February 2025, Ukraine's allies allocated an average of 3.46 billion euros per month in military aid.

Since US President Donald Trump cut off American support, the average has fallen to 2.94 billion euros. Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands have also allocated an additional 1.8 billion euros.

Expert: Risky but not impossible for Russia to make the threat a reality

Europe plans to sell the cargo from boarded "shadow ships" – and Putin responds by threatening to seize Western ships. It would be a risky move for Russia, says military analyst Jörgen Elfving to DN.

If Russia makes the threat a reality and "responds in kind" as Putin said during the day, it would risk other countries being drawn into the war and opening up a whole new front, according to Elfving.

- It remains to be seen what they actually do. It also depends on how the West continues to act against the shadow fleet, he says.

Russian move: Cages, nets and hanging water tanks

Russian oil tankers have been fitted with cages and nets in the hope of protecting them against Ukrainian drone attacks, reports the Financial Times. The method has been used before, but according to the newspaper, this is the first time it has been noted at sea.

At least one ship also has water tanks hanging from its sides, according to films and satellite images.

“The ‘Mad Max’ movies have nothing that can surpass this,” says Yoruk Isik, head of the analysis firm Bosphorus Observer.
