El Niño continues to increase in strength and will peak by year-end, according to a forecast from the UN World Meteorological Organization WMO.

This means that the weather phenomenon is likely to continue until February next year and is the strongest in more than 70 years, writes the BBC.

– We are already seeing the disruption and devastation caused by drought and flooding, and we expect these effects to worsen as El Niño intensifies, says Celeste Saulo, head of the WMO, in a press release.

El Niño occurs naturally in the Pacific Ocean and returns every few years. The phenomenon is being amplified by climate change, according to scientists.
