Foreign reconnaissance drone found in Finnish archipelago

A drone with a wingspan of "a couple of meters" has been found in a beach area in the Pellinge archipelago outside Porvoo, the Finnish Ministry of Defense and the Border Guard announced, according to Yle.

The incident is being investigated as a possible violation of Finnish territory.

The drone was discovered by a private individual on Tuesday evening, after which authorities went out to retrieve it. The drone is believed to have been intended for mapping, but there is no information about who it may have belonged to.

“We do not know where the drone came from and cannot rule out anything,” said Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen in a statement.

Expert: Russian drones should be a wake-up call

The drones at Leipzig airport in Germany show that Europe has failed to deter Russia – something that should be seen as a wake-up call. Defense expert Markus Göransson tells TT.

– If we compare what they were prepared to do a few years ago with now sending drones armed with explosives to an airport... It's serious.

He doesn't think a tough tone against Russia is enough. They will rather continue to test the borders and try to divide European countries, says Göransson.
