The Climate Threat Global Challenges

Colombia and Brazil most dangerous for environmental activists

Colombia and Brazil are the world's most dangerous countries for environmental activists, the BBC reports, citing a report from the environmental organization Global Witness.

330,000 turtles take over Mexican beaches

Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles have gathered on Mexico's southern coast, The Guardian reports.

More than 330,000 turtles are participating in the mass nesting event known as an "arribada." This specific species, which gathers in huge numbers on beaches in the state of Oaxaca, plays a key role in marine life. However, they are threatened by climate change.

"There is no rain, temperatures are high, and humidity is very low. It is not enough for the hatchlings to emerge," says Rafael Villanueva Alcázar, head of a nature reserve in Oaxaca.
