Fighting in Tigray escalates – fears of civil war

Many civilians—including several children—have been injured or killed in the latest offensive launched by Ethiopian government forces in the Tigray region.
Fighting between federal forces, answering to the administration in Addis Ababa, and the regional militia known as the TPLF (Tigray People's Liberation Front) flared up last week.
Clashes are taking place simultaneously on several fronts, but government forces are targeting the towns of Alamata and Maychew.
Those affected report repeated attacks, such as in Alamata, where a popular market was bombed over the weekend. A hospital in the regional capital, Mekele, stated on Tuesday that it had received over 40 seriously injured people from the two towns; more than 30 of them were children.
The situation also evokes memories of the 2020–2022 civil war between the TPLF and the central government's military, during which approximately 600,000 people were killed.
