Incident at UK airbase – several arrested
Several men have been arrested and buildings evacuated following a "major incident" near an airbase in the village of Whelford in southwestern England.
The men have been arrested on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act. Military bomb disposal experts have been called to the scene and are examining several vehicles.
"The site is cordoned off, but our assessment is that the incident is under control," Gloucestershire Police said in a statement, according to Sky News.
The BBC reports that counter-terrorism police are on site investigating the incident, but that the operation is reportedly not based on specific intelligence.
It is unclear whether the incident is directly linked to the local airbase, RAF Fairford, which is used by both the UK and the US.
The base has been used by the US in the conflict with Iran. In July, the UK stated that its military was ready to defend the country after Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned against allowing US bombers to take off from Fairford, according to Sky News.
A US Air Force spokesperson told Reuters that they are aware of reports regarding the incident but declined to comment on any security measures being taken.
