Over 20 dead in Bangkok floodwaters

The death toll in Thailand's flooded capital, Bangkok, has risen to 23, including four deaths in the last 24 hours. A state of emergency remains in effect, and many streets are underwater.
On Tuesday—three days after a state of emergency was declared following a week of persistent rain—pumps across Bangkok are operating at full capacity. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has warned that it could take several days to clear the floodwaters from the city, which is built on wetlands and features a vast network of canals.
According to authorities, over 700,000 people in Bangkok are affected by the flooding. Schools are closed, and thousands of people have been accommodated in the more than 200 shelters set up across the city.
Deaths have also been reported in other parts of Thailand. Flooding is affecting 29 of the country's 77 provinces, according to the national disaster agency.
