Two mass shootings – many dead
Seventeen people have been killed in a shooting at a bar outside Johannesburg.
A manhunt is now underway for eight unidentified perpetrators.
At the same time, Cape Town has also been shaken by a shooting that left ten people dead.
Two mass shootings have taken place in South Africa.
At 9:30 PM on Saturday, 17 people were killed at a bar in Wedela, west of Johannesburg, according to the country's police.
Several individuals reportedly opened fire outside the premises before entering.
"The suspects were reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. They allegedly searched some patrons and took their mobile phones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified vehicles," the police said in a statement.
The vehicles were subsequently set on fire, and a manhunt for the eight perpetrators is now underway.
Another 15 people were injured. The motive remains unknown.
In Cape Town, another shooting occurred at an entertainment venue that also sells grilled meat, according to police. Ten people were killed and eleven injured there. Police were alerted at 1:46 AM.
"Investigators are working hard to find the perpetrators behind the shooting, and no arrests have been made yet," the police stated.
South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with approximately 60 people killed in the country every day, according to AFP.
