Police suspect a serial killer is targeting women near the South African city of Johannesburg.

An eleventh woman was found murdered on Sunday, the day after a tenth victim was discovered.

Over a period of ten weeks, a total of eleven women have been found dead in the Ekurhuleni municipality, just east of Johannesburg.

The body was found in an open field in broad daylight by a patrolling security company, according to police spokesperson Brenda Muridili. No details were provided regarding the cause of death or the victim's age.

On Saturday, a victim was found near a cemetery in the same area. The victim was partially undressed, according to police, who added that the woman appeared to have been stoned to death.

Police issued a "general warning" in the township and its vicinity when a ninth body was found and similarities to previous murders became apparent.
