US scraps emissions limits for coal power
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is repealing rules that limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants fueled by coal and natural gas.
According to the EPA, the deregulation will save the industry hundreds of billions of dollars in costs.
The decision marks another break with the climate and environmental policies pursued under Democratic presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. A long list of environmental regulations has been overturned under Donald Trump, who has vowed to "unleash" American energy production and has described climate change as a hoax.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has described the deregulation as a way to put an end to Biden and Obama's "war on so much of our domestic energy supply."
Environmental and public health organizations warn that the new rules will have a significant impact on human health and are expected to challenge the decision in court.
