Ukraine: No energy attacks if the Kremlin plays along
Russia and Ukraine have agreed not to attack each other's energy facilities, according to US President Donald Trump.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy writes on Telegram that this is Ukraine's proposal, but that it applies only if Russia agrees to it.
"Ukraine is not convinced that Russia has any desire to abide by an agreement," the Ukrainian president writes regarding the prospects of an "energy facility truce."
He also emphasizes that any agreement must be long-term "and not collapse after the Russians have held their 'elections' and receive (temporary) relief from tensions surrounding gasoline and diesel fuel"—referring to the Russian parliamentary elections beginning on Friday.
"The war must end," Zelenskyy writes, noting that "de-escalation regarding critical infrastructure could be the first step toward peace."
Over the weekend, he told Ukrainian television—according to the *Kyiv Independent *—that he wants to discuss a proposal to refrain from attacking grain exports and the energy sector with Trump in New York during the UN General Assembly next week.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump writes that "the rise in diesel prices is caused primarily by the war in Ukraine, not Iran."
On Sunday, he urged Ukraine to stop attacking Russian energy facilities because "it causes fuel shortages."
"We’ve spoken to Zelenskyy about it; there are many other targets, but don't hit the diesel—it hurts the world," Trump said at a press conference in Ireland, according to the Irish broadcaster RTÉ. In July, Russia imposed restrictions on diesel exports to address the country's fuel shortage, which is caused by Ukrainian attacks on its energy facilities.
