The EU should play a larger role in the Arctic, urge participants at a summit in Rovaniemi, Finland.

Summit host Petteri Orpo warns against Russia.

"The EU must treat the Arctic as a strategic border region to counter the threat from Russia," said Finnish Prime Minister Orpo at a press conference following Monday’s summit.

In a joint statement, twelve EU countries also call on the EU to "assume a more strategic and proactive role in the European part of the Arctic."

In addition to Orpo, attendees included European Council President António Costa, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

The European Commission—whose President, Ursula von der Leyen, visited Greenland last week—has previously promised a new Arctic strategy for later this autumn.
