US tightens sanctions against Cuba
US sanctions against Cuba are to be tightened, the US Department of the Treasury has announced.
The new sanctions primarily target travel and financial transactions. Among other things, more types of business conferences and cultural exchanges between the US and Cuba will require authorization.
The administration of President Joe Biden had—to some extent—opened the US banking system to Cubans in order to support Cuba's emerging private sector. Some of these measures are now being rolled back.
Relations between the countries have deteriorated during Donald Trump's second term as US president. Among other actions, the US imposed an oil blockade on Cuba that has contributed to a deep economic crisis in the country.
