Curfews were in effect in several French cities last night following the unrest that spiraled out of control over the weekend. According to the Prime Minister, the measures were effective.

“The targeted curfews contributed to calm tonight,” Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu wrote on social media.

On Monday, Lecornu urged the prefects of France’s departments to implement local curfews in affected cities. Curfews of varying scope were introduced in parts of central Paris and several other major cities, including Bordeaux, Lille, and Nice.

During the night, a helicopter flew over the Place de la République in Paris—a common gathering point for protesters—shining a powerful spotlight to ensure the area was empty.

In Lyon, a few hundred people gathered despite an existing ban on demonstrations; however, they did so to express their support for the many business owners who have been affected by looting and vandalism.
