Security in Europe

Merz warns about Putin: The threat must not be underestimated

European nations must not underestimate the danger posed by Russia, warns German Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz in an interview with Bloomberg.

“Russia is in the process of destabilizing the entire political order on our European continent.”

He states that Russia fears democracy and European success.

“It is not just about conquering territory in Ukraine.”

Merz acknowledges that the European economy is suffering due to aid provided to Ukraine, but emphasizes that this support will remain in place until the war ends.

Expert: Let Sweden foot the bill for Finland’s defense

Researcher and political scientist Jan Kallberg argues that Sweden, together with Norway and Denmark, should establish a defense fund of approximately 11 billion kronor—funds intended to bolster Finland’s armed forces.

In an article published by the American think tank CEPA, Kallberg writes that while the Nordic countries are well-prepared to face the Russian threat, the deteriorating security situation demands even more. He notes that Finland has the lowest GDP among them and therefore requires assistance from its Nordic neighbors.

“The Nordic defense fund could enable Finland to make strategic acquisitions that strengthen the capabilities of existing units—units that would likely be the first on the scene in the event of a future conflict in Northern Europe,” he writes.

Kallberg also suggests that, among the Nordic nations, Sweden should bear the largest share of the cost.
