Little hope for change among Israel’s Arab population
The war in Gaza and settler violence in the occupied West Bank may prompt some of Israel’s Arab residents to head to the polls on October 27, reports *Haaretz*.
The newspaper spoke with Manal, a young woman who initially intended to boycott the election but has since changed her mind. While she does not believe that Israeli politics contribute to change for Palestinians living in the country, she still wants her voice to be heard.
“I don’t have high hopes for the election, and I don’t think there will be any major change. But perhaps there could be a small change.”
She grew up in the city of Umm el-Fahm, where only 38 percent of the predominantly Arab population voted in the last election.
Israel’s Arab citizens make up just over a fifth of the population, and many traditionally vote for the United Arab List, or Ra’am. Both incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, have ruled out cooperation with Arab parties after the election.
He supports Netanyahu and urged voters to cast their ballots for him.
