Reports: Musk ordered throttling of Starlink
Elon Musk made the decision to restrict the military version of the Starlink satellite network, which hampered Ukraine’s defensive capabilities last week. This is according to sources with knowledge of the matter, speaking to The Wall Street Journal.
The restriction meant that Ukrainian drones—both offensive and defensive—lost their connection when traveling above a certain speed, effectively rendering them useless.
According to two sources who spoke to the WSJ, U.S. President Donald Trump was only informed after the restriction became public. Another source, however, claims that tech entrepreneur Musk and Trump discussed the matter beforehand.
The newspaper’s findings stand in stark contrast to what Musk himself wrote on the social media platform X shortly after the news emerged: "Any restrictions on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military, and by extension, the President."
Ukraine has reported that the restrictions—reportedly implemented on October 14—have allowed Russian attacks to successfully bypass their defenses.
The throttling occurred after Trump struck a deal regarding diesel supplies with Russia and launched renewed attacks against Zelenskyy. Trump is demanding that Ukraine stop attacking Russian oil refineries—a condition Kyiv has indicated it might accept, provided that Russia simultaneously ceases its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. So far, that has not happened.
