A tanker in the middle of the Persian Gulf has been fired upon and struck by several projectiles. Injuries have been reported.

The attack took place on Wednesday evening, according to the British Royal Navy’s maritime security agency, UKMTO. At the time, the vessel was in the central waters of the Persian Gulf, situated between Bahrain and Qatar on one side and Iran on the other.

UKMTO states that injuries have been reported, though the brief notice does not specify whether there were any fatalities.

Most attacks targeting tankers in the Persian Gulf have occurred closer to the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway leading out of the gulf. In this instance, the incident appears to have taken place approximately 100 kilometers from the northern tip of Qatar.
