A one-year prison sentence was handed down to the man who delivered the fatal punch to a Swedish police officer in Copenhagen. Danish politicians are now outraged by the sentence, which they consider unacceptably lenient.

"I struggle to find words for how furious I am that a Swedish police officer and family man was subjected to such a senseless act of violence," the country's Minister of Justice, Nicolai Wammen (S), told TV2.

The man, who was convicted on Wednesday under a less severe statute regarding violence, has prior convictions for offenses including attempted murder and rape. Wammen believes this history should have had a greater impact on the sentence than current legislation allows.

"If you have already demonstrated a propensity for violence against others, that should be reflected in the sentencing when you do it again—especially when it results in such tragic consequences. I intend to introduce a legislative proposal to address this."

"Sugar-coated legislation"

Anders Vistisen, justice spokesperson for the Danish People's Party (Dansk Folkeparti), views the verdict as proof that Denmark has "sugar-coated" legislation.

"At the same time, we are extremely critical of the fact that it was not possible to strip this man of his Danish citizenship." According to the Danish news agency Ritzau, the man arrived in Denmark from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as an infant.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Social Democrats) has previously highlighted the man's background and criticized the prosecutor's initial indication of a sentence ranging from eight to ten months.

"It cannot be the case that a man comes from the Congo, goes down to Islands Brygge, punches another person, and gets away with a potentially lenient sentence," she said last summer.

Elon Musk reacts

The Social Democratic Party has not clarified the extent to which it wishes to increase penalties for individuals with a history of violent acts.

Prosecutor Søren Harbo called for a prison sentence of at least one year during his closing arguments at the Copenhagen City Court, justifying the proposed penalty by noting that a punch does not normally result in death.

News of the one-year prison sentence has been widely shared on various social media platforms. On Wednesday evening, tech billionaire Elon Musk also commented on the verdict. "Only one year for murder. Outrageous," he wrote in a comment on an article about the ruling.
