The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln was able to anchor in the port city of San Diego on Thursday.
The crew is exhausted after 265 consecutive days at sea and severe hardships on board.
The aircraft carrier traveled to the Persian Gulf region in January to support a potential US war against Iran.
The ship carries a crew of around 5,000, but conditions on board involved hardships and tragedies. The ship's galley ran short of food. Toilets were broken, and the water was contaminated. Furthermore, alarms were raised regarding mental health issues on board the USS Abraham Lincoln, as several individuals attempted to jump overboard.
After months of deployment, the crew was allowed ashore in Thailand, near the resort town of Pattaya—though subject to extensive restrictions on their activities.
But home port is best, and on Thursday, family members were waiting to welcome the sailors back.
