The EU head on Lampedusa: "Italy can count on the EU" "Italy can count on the EU".  

 

That's what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in Italian when she visited Lampedusa with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Sunday.  

 

Lampedusa is hard pressed by the refugee flows across the Mediterranean, as the island is the gateway to Europe for many migrants. In the last three days, 8,500 people have come to the island, as many as the island's total number of inhabitants, writes Corriere Della Sera. Deputy Mayor Attilio Lucia describes it as "the island collapsing". 

 

- We really need a European response to all this. We have to establish a criterion for who comes in, von der Leyen said when she visited the island.  

 

Italy wants the EU to stop boats from leaving Tunisia. However, such an action would have violated international maritime laws, since only Tunisia has the right to determine its territory, writes Deutsche Welle.

Indigenous Australian reform losing support  

 

In Australia, people have taken to the streets to show their support for the reform that is supposed to strengthen the rights of the country's indigenous population, ABC writes. 

 

However, support for the reform has decreased according to the latest opinion polls. Currently, approximately 60 percent are against the reform, while 40 percent say they are ready to vote yes.  

 

The proposal is that the indigenous population should be given a statutory right to be consulted on legislative proposals that affect them.

Demonstrations are taking place in several cities on Sunday.

South Korea's president warns of Kim and Putin's plans 

 

Yoon Suk-Yeol, president of South Korea, warns of deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, AP reports. In a written statement, he says that the world community will "unite on a deeper level" to deal with the ambitions of the two countries.  

 

"Military cooperation between North Korea and Russia is illegal and unfair because it goes against UN Security Council resolutions and several other international sanctions," he writes. 

 

The president is said to be preparing to raise the issue during the UN summit in New York next week.  

 

South Korea, Japan, the United States and several other countries are currently discussing how to respond to Russia and North Korea's plans for deeper cooperation, Yoon's staff said.
