The coronavirus China's global ambitions
Concerns about China's portable lab mapping dna globally
When China sent its portable laboratory Fire-Eye to Serbia in the spring of 2020, it was seen as a generous contribution in the mapping work of the coronavirus. But now experts are warning that the equipment could be part of China's efforts to collect valuable information about people's DNA around the world, the Washington Post reports.
- Covid-19 was the gateway, says an American intelligence analyst to the newspaper.
The Chinese investments have been going on for over ten years. The country has, among other things, bought up American genetics companies and carried out hacking efforts.
The Fire-Eye laboratories spread across much of the world during the pandemic. Among others to Canada, Saudi Arabia, Latvia, South Africa and Australia.

French prosecutors want to put Marine Le Pen on trial
The prosecutor's office in Paris is requesting that far-right politician Marine Le Pen, her father Jean-Marie Le Pen and 23 others be brought to justice. The prosecutor accuses them of embezzlement of EU funds between 2004 and 2016, French media write.
The suspects have all been active in or around Le Pen's National Rally party, according to France Info. According to the prosecutors, the party has used money intended for EU staff to cover the party's expenses.
Ultimately, Marine Le Pen risks ten years in prison and a fine of one million euros, according to Reuters. In a statement to Le Monde, Le Pen writes that her party disputes the accusation and considers it incorrect.

50 arrested after major raid against the Italian mafia
More than 50 people have been arrested in a police operation against the 'Ndrangheta mafia in Italy, Reuters reports. According to the police, 400 officers took part in the raid, which went by the name Karpanthos.
The investigators have found evidence that points to the mafia being behind large-scale drug smuggling, money laundering and extortion.
The 'Ndrangheta has taken over as Italy's most powerful mafia network after Cosa Nostra, whose former leader was sentenced to life in prison last summer.
