The King's Jubilee Celebration

The King's Jubilee Celebration
The King: Wants to continue serving the people in the coming years

On the occasion of King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrating 50 years on the throne, he spoke to the nation on Friday evening. In the speech, the king thanks both his family and the Swedish people for the support he has felt over the years.

- Particularly important is the trust I have received and receive from you, the people of Sweden. Your support has been invaluable to me, and for this I want to express my deep and warm thanks today, he says in the speech that SVT has published.

Opinion polls have recently shown that a large part of the Swedish people want the king to hand over the throne to Crown Princess Victoria. In the speech, however, the king says that he wants to continue to serve the Swedish people "in the coming years". The King's Sloop, the Vasa Order, is practicing before the royal procession on Saturday.

Large security effort at the king's 50th anniversary

The king has been keen to meet the public during Friday and Saturday's celebrations of his 50 years on the throne. The deteriorating security situation, and the fact that the terror threat level in Sweden has been raised from level 3 to level 4, means that the security burden will be great, reports Ekot.

A large number of posted police officers, blocked streets and a ban on boat traffic in central Stockholm are some of the measures within the framework of the police operation.

- We can never ever guarantee safety. […] On the other hand, we have an extremely high level of ambition for this procession to be carried out in a safe and secure manner, says Michael Fetz,

the Stockholm police's coordinator for counter-terrorism.

The police stress that there is no concrete threat to either the royal family or the events.
