Many Chinese spy alarms in the US - new laws are being considered
Chinese nationals have been targeted upwards of 100 times at military bases or other sensitive locations in the United States in recent years. The suspected espionage often takes place in places where there are rarely tourists, American representatives told the Wall Street Journal.
The people can often at most be convicted of trespassing at the local level - not at the federal level - because the appropriate legislation is lacking. Congress is now considering new laws, says Democrat Jason Crow, who sits on the Intelligence Committee.
The Chinese embassy in Washington dismisses the spy alarms as "made up" and spokesperson Liu Pengyu calls on the US to "abandon the Cold War mentality".
Neither the White House, the FBI nor the US Department of Homeland Security would comment, while the Pentagon only gave general answers.
