Models misjudged Otis – hurricane flights had to retreat
In a short time, the storm Otis was upgraded from a storm to a hurricane that was judged to have catastrophic consequences for Mexico. According to the New York Times, the models used by meteorologists missed that the storm would increase in intensity.
An aircraft used to assess severe storms was flown into the eye of the storm and was then able to determine that the intensity was much stronger than the satellite data indicated.
"In the coming days and weeks, researchers will try to answer that question," writes the NYT.
Pablo Navarro, an Acapulco resident who was sheltered in a hotel, told the AP that authorities seemed caught off guard by how quickly the situation deteriorated.
He thought he was going to die when Otis struck.
- I took shelter in the bathroom and thankfully the door held.
