The riotous statue has met its fate: An oven
The statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee in American Charlottesville has been melted down, the Washington Post reports. The statue's presence or non-existence played a major role in the white supremacy riots there in 2017, when one person was killed and 35 injured.
In a southern Virginia town, which WP agreed not to name because of the risk of violence, the statue was broken into smaller pieces that were dropped into a melting furnace on Saturday.
- It is a better sculpture now than it has ever been. We are taking away what it has meant to some, said one of the metal caster.
The motive for melting down the disputed work was that the metal could be reused and thus given a new purpose. Defenders of the statue have protested the decision.
Anti-racists have long called for the Robert E Lee statue to be taken down because it could be interpreted as paying tribute to the era of slavery - something far-right groups oppose and say is historical revisionism.

Anticlimax at the farm: "Come out with your hands in the air"
Police in Maine yesterday surrounded a farm in Bowdoin, east of Lewiston, Maine. The farm belongs to a relative of the suspected mass shooter Robert Card.
Heavily armed police officers, including from the FBI, and a police helicopter were on the scene. Using a megaphone, Card and others who might be inside were urged to "come out with your hands in the air."
Late on Thursday evening, the operation ended without any signs that anyone had been arrested, AP writes. A post on the Maine Police Department's Facebook page described the approach as standard, according to the news agency.
"It is not known if Robert Card is in any of the homes that the police are searching."
There is still no known motive behind yesterday's mass shooting in Maine where 18 people were killed. The perpetrator is on the run. His sister has told investigators that Card may have been looking for his ex-girlfriend at the locations where he shot, including a bowling alley.

Estonia: The gas line and cable damage is linked
All three incidents in which a gas pipeline and two data cables were damaged underwater between Estonia, Sweden and Finland are connected, says Estonian President Kaja Kallas according to Reuters.
- Regarding the Estonian data cables, no sequence of events can be confirmed or excluded, she adds in a statement.
Tallinn is investigating the two cable damages, while Finland is investigating the damage to the Balticconnector gas pipeline.
Finnish investigators have singled out the Hong Kong-registered container ship Newnew Polar Bear as a suspect. The Estonian investigators are also focusing on the ship.
A large, broken anchor and a tow track several kilometers long have been found on the seabed, the Finnish police announced earlier this week.
