Eight dead in new serious train accident in India
Eight people have died and at least twenty have been injured in a train accident in India, writes the Indian newspaper Mint. The accident occurred on Sunday in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh when a rolling train ran into a stationary one.
Train accidents in India tend to be serious. As recently as June, 280 people died after two passenger trains ran into each other.
"Given how many Indians rely on trains for their commute, it is alarming to see another such serious accident so close to the previous one," writes Indian Minister MK Stalin in a statement.
Nearby residents and rescue personnel were helped to rescue the victims.

Big investments in Indian train safety have borne fruit
Train accidents are common in India and are often fatal, but the country has invested a lot in improving infrastructure and technology to deal with the problem, writes TT.
Among other things, the country's Ministry of Railways has legislated that all locomotives must be equipped with special equipment that must alert train drivers to potential dangers
Equipment has also been installed along the railways to amplify signals, for example in dense fog, writes the Indian Financial Express.
After the latest accident on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted his railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to assess the situation, writes the Times of India.
