Analysis: US Is Isolated - Remarkably Low Support
The United States appears isolated after the vote in the UN General Assembly. Only 12 other countries chose to follow the country's example and vote against the resolution for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza that was subsequently adopted.
“The outcome was remarkable. It showed how limited the direct support for the world's only superpower really is," writes The Guardian's diplomatic correspondent Patrick Wintour in an analysis.
In an analysis in the Washington Post, Karen DeYoung and Claire Parker state that the US has now changed its line on the issue of "humanitarian pauses" in Israel's airstrikes in Gaza.
"Now the Biden administration is a strong proponent of these and is pressuring Israel to agree to them," write DeYoung and Parker, noting that the shift comes at the same time as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has become even worse and that many countries have become more critical of how Israel is managing the war against Hamas.Rage of Israel's UN ambassador: "The UN is no longer legitimate or relevant"
Israel's UN ambassador Gilan Erdan reacts with anger after the UN adopted a resolution calling for a "humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza, writes Reuters.
The UN no longer has any legitimacy or relevance, Erdan says, accusing the countries that voted for the resolution of "defending Nazi terrorists" instead of Israel.
- This ridiculous resolution has the guts to call for a ceasefire. The goal of it is for Israel to stop defending itself against Hamas, so that Hamas can burn us alive, he says.
