Trump favorite becomes the fourth person to be nominated 

The Republicans have nominated Mike Johnson from the state of Louisiana to be the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives. This after Tom Emmer resigned just a few hours after being nominated for the post on Tuesday evening.  

Mike Johnson is the fourth Republican nominated in the past two weeks after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted in a historic vote. 

Johnson is described as a Trump favorite who, among other things, stood by the ex-president's side in his allegations of electoral fraud in connection with the 2020 election, writes Bloomberg. Tom Emmer belongs to the party's more moderate phalanx.

This was when it quickly became clear that Emmer would not succeed in gathering the 217 votes needed to become speaker of the American House of Representatives. The Minnesota Republican thus becomes the third person to fail to become speaker since Kevin McCarthy was ousted in a historic vote three weeks ago.
