IEA: Demand for fossil fuels will peak in 2030
The demand for oil, coal and fossil gas will reach its peak by the year 2030, according to a report from the international energy council IEA. Bloomberg reports.
The agency does not consider that a sudden decline is likely. Rather, it is a kind of plateau that will last for many years. Demand is also not expected to slow down enough to limit global warming to the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree target.
- The transition to clean energy is happening all over the world and cannot be stopped. It is not a question of "if", but of "how soon", and the sooner the better, says IEA director Fatih Birol, according to the BBC.

Study: No matter what we do – part of Antarctica is collapsing
A significant portion of Antarctica faces collapse no matter how much the world cuts carbon dioxide emissions and limits global warming. This is shown by a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
According to the study, the melting may take hundreds of years, but the sea level rise of 1.8 meters that follows will be enough to affect how and where the Earth's future population lives, AP writes.
Ice scientist Eric Rignot, who has not worked on the study himself, tells the news agency that this part of Antarctica - West Antarctica - is "doomed".
- The damage is already done.
Oceanographer Kaitlin Naughten, who has led the study, however, does not like the word "doomed". She believes that parts of the scenario can be avoided if the world in the future figures out how to restore carbon dioxide levels.
