Transgender hope as Japan's HD tests team
Hopes are high within Japan's LGBTQ movement ahead of the Supreme Court ruling this week on a law on sterilization in legal gender reassignments, Reuters reports.
This since the transman Gen Suzuki earlier in October was vindicated in another case in a lower instance, where the court judged that the requirement to surgically remove all congenital genitalia in order to change gender was legally against the constitution.
Masataka Masaki, who represents the activist group ESTO, told Reuters he believed the ruling could affect the Supreme Court.
- It shows that awareness has spread in society that demands for surgery are an abuse of human rights, he says.
The Supreme Court is expected to make a decision in the case they try, about a trans woman, during Wednesday.
