China calls for strengthened security for Chinese in Myanmar
China wants the military junta that rules Myanmar to "cooperate" to improve security at the border between the countries, writes AFP.
The statement comes after China's Vice Foreign Minister Nong Rong visited Myanmar for talks with junta leaders over the weekend, while militia groups carried out several successful attacks in the northern parts of the country.
According to the Asia Times, a Chinese citizen was killed on Saturday after junta forces fired a grenade that landed on the Chinese side of the border.
"Ensure that Chinese lives and property in the border country are safe, and take effective measures to strengthen the security of Chinese personnel, Chinese institutions and Chinese projects in Myanmar," Nong Rong wrote in a statement, according to Reuters.
