Sources: Dangerous AI discovery got Sam Altman fired - 'threat to humanity'
In a letter, researchers at Open AI are said to have warned the board of new discoveries that point to the company developing technology that could pose a threat to humanity.
The researchers' warnings may have been the basis for Sam Altman being fired as CEO, sources told Reuters.
According to the sources, the project that the researchers warned about will go under the name Q*. Within that, the company has made a breakthrough in attempts to develop so-called general artificial intelligence, AGI. It is defined as a level of AI that surpasses human intelligence in several fundamental areas.
The company has previously stated that Altman was fired for not being completely honest in his communication with the board.
Altman was reinstated as CEO earlier this week.

Altman's return raises fears of dangerous AI development
Sam Altman's return as CEO of Open AI and reshuffle of the board creates concern for a dangerous development of artificial intelligence, write the tech site Wired and TT.
The board's mission has been to keep AI development in check for the "good of humanity" rather than acting blindly to profit interests, writes Wired.
But that Altman is now coming back is proof that the company's self-regulation has failed. Now the control is released and the profit interest can rule freely, warns AI professor Toby Walsh to TT.
- This idea that companies can regulate themselves seems far away now. We should be both excited and nervous about the direction and speed in which AI is developing, he told the news agency.
According to information to Reuters, Altman was fired after the company made a breakthrough in the development of so-called general artificial intelligence, which can pose a threat to humanity.

Analysis: The solution to the riddle may lie in Altman's past
The reasons why Sam Altman was fired as Open AI's CEO are still shrouded in obscurity. But clues may be found in the AI evangelist's past, note Elizabeth Dwoskin and Nitasha Tiko in an analysis in the Washington Post.
"Altman's personality traits — not least the perception that he is too opportunistic even for the results-oriented Silicon Valley culture — have at times alienated some of his closest allies," they write.
Sam Altman later renegotiated his contract with Open AI and rejoined as the company's CEO.
In another analysis in the Washington Post, Drew Harwell sees parallels between the fortunes of Open AI and the social platform X under Elon Musk.
Both companies have built devoted followings through promises to build technology for a changing world, he writes, adding:
"But under Musk and Altman, power has been consolidated into a small group of like-minded people and loyalists who act in secret and answer to no one."
