LGBTQ struggle in Africa

“World’s first gay imam” shot dead in South Africa

Muhsin Hendricks, who was called the world’s first openly gay imam, has been shot dead in South Africa. The BBC reports.

The 57-year-old ran a mosque in Cape Town where homosexuals and other marginalized Muslims were welcome. He was murdered on Saturday morning when the car he was travelling in was attacked in the town of Gqeberha, formerly called Port Elizabeth.

“Two unknown, masked assailants got out of their car and fired several shots at his car,” local police wrote in a statement.

The motive is unknown, and no one has been arrested.

Mourned by LGBTQ activists: “A huge loss”

LGBTQ activists are reacting with dismay after the murder of Muhsin Hendricks, who was called the world’s first openly gay imam, in South Africa. Including the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), according to AFP.

“The global ILGA family is in deep shock after the news of the murder of Muhsin Hendricks, and calls on the authorities to thoroughly investigate what we fear may be a hate crime,” writes ILGA director Julia Ehrt in a statement.

Ulrika Westerlund (MP), Swedish member of parliament and LGBTQ activist, says that Hendricks was a well-known name in the LGBTQ movement and calls his death “a huge loss.”

– He dedicated his life to ensuring that queer Muslims felt they did not have to choose between their faith and their LGBTQI identity, she tells QX.
