Finland allows nuclear weapons: "Historic reform"
The Finnish parliament has voted through a law amendment that allows nuclear weapons on Finnish soil. Several media outlets are reporting this.
“This historic reform strengthens the security of Finland and the entire NATO,” writes Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen on X.
The change in law means that the ban on the import, production and possession of nuclear weapons is lifted. At the same time, Hakkanen emphasizes that the country does not strive to have nuclear weapons.
The vote, which took place on Wednesday, passed with 125 votes in favor and 61 against. Above all, it was the SDP and the Left Alliance that voted against the proposal, while the Center voted in favor, writes Yle.
Hegseth: Some NATO countries need to “do more”
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says that “many” NATO allies are fulfilling their defense commitments. At the same time, other countries need to do more, he believes.
– NATO must return to being a real and tough military alliance, with real capacity to meet threats and defend Europe, he says at a press conference according to TT.
Both NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Hegseth are talking about a version 3.0 of NATO, which should be able to do more to meet military threats.
The press conference is being held in connection with a meeting of defense ministers in Brussels.
