At least seven civilians killed in airstrike in Myanmar
At least seven civilians, including a five-year-old child, have been killed in an airstrike in western Myanmar, AFP reports. At least 15 people are said to have been injured.
According to a local rescue worker, three fighter jets dropped a total of nine bombs on the town of Kyauktaw near the border with Bangladesh. The town is located in the conflict-ridden Rakhine region, which is mainly controlled by the separatist group Arakan Army.
Myanmar's military junta has not commented on the information.
Witness to the junta's airstrike: "I am speechless"
Htay Htay owns a shop in the town of Kyauktaw in Myanmar, which was hit by an airstrike by the military junta earlier in the day. Seven civilians were killed, including her husband.
“I even went searching the burning houses, but I couldn’t find him. I didn’t realize he was inside our house,” she told AFP.
She says she believes her husband went into the house to look for her during the attack. She only found him when rescue workers carried his body out of the house.
“I’m at a loss for words,” she says.
Htay Htay lives in Rakhine state, formerly known as Arakan. The area has been badly affected by conflicts between Myanmar’s military junta and the separatist Arakan Army.
